Character Education

SHMS is a PBIS gold school.

Our Eagle Expectations:

  • Respect yourself and others
  • Respect your environment
  • Respect Learning

 What is PBIS?

PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. It is a national program that schools implement to help students and staff monitor and reward appropriate behavior. The primary goal of PBIS is to remove inappropriate behaviors so that education can occur in an optimal environment.

How has SHMS implemented PBIS?

SHMS introduced PBIS during the 2003-2004 school year. Eagle Expectations is the name of SHMS’ PBIS program. SHMS has three school-wide expectations.

  • Respect Yourself and Others
  • Respect Our Environment
  • Respect Learning

Staff members reward students for exhibiting expectations with Eagle Cash!

What do students do with Eagle Cash?

Students save their Eagle Cash and then spend it in a variety of ways. Students may purchase school supplies or admission to special events. Each month, SHMS has an event planned such as the Ice Cream Sundae Bar in September, the Holiday Shoppers Fair in December, of the Pancake Breakfast in April. The End of Year Eagle Cash Trip to Jolly Rogers Waterpark is a highlight that students, staff and parents work towards all year. (Last year almost 300 students earned this event!)

Is PBIS working at SHMS?

ABSOLUTELY! Office referrals at SHMS have been decreased over 77% since the introduction of Eagle Expectations.

SHMS has been recognized as an Exemplar School in the State of Maryland for four consecutive years!

SHMS has presented the success of the Eagle Expectations program to schools all over the state and has been contacted by schools as far away as Florida for suggestions!

How does SHMS pay for the rewards?

All rewards are paid for through fundraising and community and staff donations!
